Vietnam visa exemption: visa-free countries and how long you can stay

Citizens of some countries can enter Vietnam without a visa, for a stay that depends on their nationality. The lists are published by Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This page sets them out for ordinary passport holders.

Quick answer

Citizens of 24 countries — including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea and the Netherlands — can stay in Vietnam visa-free for 45 days. Citizens of most ASEAN countries get 14 to 30 days under bilateral agreements, and Chile and Panama 90 days. Anyone may visit Phu Quoc island visa-free for 30 days. 45-day visa exemption for 24 countries

Vietnam grants a unilateral visa exemption of 45 days from the date of entry, regardless of passport type, to citizens of:

Unilateral visa exemption (45 days)
CountriesRule
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United KingdomResolution 44/NQ-CP of 7 March 2025 — any entry purpose; from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028

For the second group, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists two conditions: a passport valid for at least 6 months, and not being in a case where entry is refused under the Immigration Law. If you plan to work, study or stay longer than 45 days, apply for the right visa before you travel.

Bilateral visa exemption for ordinary passports

Vietnam has visa exemption agreements with more than 90 countries, but most cover only diplomatic and official passports. For ordinary passports, the Ministry's list (updated to 14 March 2025) gives:

Visa-free stay for ordinary passports (bilateral)

Philippines21 days
Cambodia30 days
Indonesia30 days
Laos30 days
Malaysia30 days

Several agreements add conditions, such as a passport valid for at least 6 months, an onward or return ticket, or a trip that is not for paid work. Check your own country's entry in the Ministry's visa exemption list.

Phu Quoc island: 30 days visa-free

Foreigners entering Phu Quoc directly from abroad are exempt from a visa for a stay of up to 30 days. According to the Ministry's list, this also applies if you stay in the transit area of another Vietnamese international airport or seaport and then continue to Phu Quoc. It does not let you leave the transit area to visit the mainland.

Other exemptions

  • Holders of a valid Vietnamese temporary or permanent residence card do not need a visa (Article 12 of the Immigration Law).
  • Decree 221/2025/ND-CP allows a visa exemption card of up to 5 years, with stays of up to 90 days per entry, for special groups such as invited guests, scholars, experts and investors. A Vietnamese agency or organisation applies for it.
  • Diplomatic and official passport holders often have separate agreements — see the Ministry's full list.

If you need to stay longer

A visa-free entry gives only the number of days in the rules above. If your plans may run longer, apply for a Vietnam e-visa (up to 90 days) before you travel rather than relying on the exemption.

Not sure which rule applies to your passport? Use the Vietnam visa checker by nationality, see Vietnam visa requirements or send us a case check.
